Johor Bahru Day 3: Restoran Ya Wang + Why Him Movie Review

It's the first day of 2017.
Happy new year, everybody.

We woke up at 8 plus again to have our free breakfast buffet provided by the hotel. Feel a little dreading today, it was our last day of our short getaway. We headed down to the restaurant at same timing as yesterday.

We started our day with a nice breakfast provided by the hotel. The eggs were so nice and addictive, we helped ourselves with 2 servings, so yummy.

Other than eggs, I also ate you tiao.
It is not crispy like the one we have in Singapore.

Went back hotel to rest until check out time.
Pack our barang barang too.

Selfie time.

Dome with packing up.
Time for check out and proceed for our lunch.

I have a comfortable 3D2N stay at New York Hotel. It is decent and clean, a place that I will want to come back and stay again.

Stepping out of our hotel.
Waiting for the car to pick us up.

We traveled down to Jalan Segget which is near JB custom to try out Restoran Ya Wang 鸭皇药材烧腊大王.

A very famous restoran for their duck. It was nearly full house when we reached at 12.30pm.

We had ai yu ice jelly drink recommended by the staff.
The drink was refreshing and ease our thirst.

We ordered half a duck to share.
I'm not really a fan of herbal but this herbal duck is an exception. The gravy coated gave a savoury taste and the herbal taste was not that overwhelming.

My favourite omelette.
I simply love eating eggs.

Having good food makes me happy.
 Lunch cost about RM67.

After lunch, we walked to JB City Square which was around 10 minutes walk. We decided to catch a movie before we went back to Singapore. We were watching 'Why Him' which started at 2.30pm. The movie ticket costs RM18 per person.

During the holidays, loving but overprotective Ned (Bryan Cranston) travels to California to visit his daughter Stephanie (Zoey Deutch) at Stanford University. While there, he meets his biggest nightmare: her well-meaning but socially awkward boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). Even though Laird is a multimillionaire, Ned disapproves of his freewheeling attitude and unfiltered language. His panic level escalates even further when he learns that Laird plans to ask for Stephanie's hand in marriage.

t
'Why Him' is a hilarious and entertaining show. I was laughing all the way from start to end. There is lots of swearing words use. It's about a movie of how the future father-in-law accepts the prospective son-in-law, how they get along and win her father's consent.

It's worth watching for the humour.

Movie rating: 3.5/5

Before I left JB, I got macha and salted egg cheese tarts from Season.
I find it nice when I first tried in at KP's place, so I wanna it for my family to try.

Back to Singapore, I have my dinner at Kopitiam before heading back home.

That goes my 3 days short getaway trip.
It was my first time away of Singapore during New Year. Back to Singapore for a new beginning. Hope 2017 will be an awesome year, happy 2017.

Can't wait for the next getaway.

Happenings in January - Shang Pin Hot Pot + Food Hunt

Monday 23/1/17

This coming weekend is Chinese New Year (CNY), the most important festive in the lunar calendar is here. I have an early CNY celebration with my lunch kakis by having a reunion steamboat lunch at Shang Pin Hot Pot.

We set off to Rendezvous Gallery by Nick's car and arrived Shang Pin Hot Pot.

Since they were 8 of us, we split into group of 4 where 4 person will share 3 soup based together. Our groups were split based on beef and non beef. We selected the soup base of Tomato, Sichuan Spicy and Chicken.

I love tomato soup based the best, Sichuan spicy is too spicy for me.

My ingredients arrived.
Time to start digging.

It was our yearly tradition to have a reunion lunch together.
We always explored around and enjoyed good food together.

**

Feeling full from the lunch, I have late dinner that night at Kopitiam @ Marina Square.

I chanced upon the salted egg chicken rice with egg at Mini Wok stall and decided to try it. The salted egg gravy coated on the chicken was generous, you can taste the salted egg in every piece.

Bf ordered the curry chicken claypot for sharing.
It was yet another filling meal.

It's not the food we eat that matters, but the person we are eating with.

Tuesday 24/1/17

Meet up with bf after work to have dinner together, we always try to spend time together when time permits.

I suggested to have dinner at Old People Park food centre that is near Chinatown OG. Lately we love venturing for hawker food.

We have Hokkien mee,
We have been going around hawker centre to try out their Hokkien mee, still searching for the best.

We also ordered xiao long bao for sharing.
I love the xiao long bao here, they were serving piping hot and the broth was tasty.

After the dinner, we went to Mei Heong Yuen Dessert located at Temple Street for some sweet treat.
We ordered Mango with Pomelo & Sago and Mango Roll for sharing.

The month of December and January are the month of festive, the month of good food and gathering. More food hunt posts coming up.

Johor Bahru Day 2: Siang Kee Seafood Restaurant + Foot Massage

Happy New Year Eve, everyone.
Is everyone having a great time out there?

We woke up at 8 plus to freshen up ourselves and get ready to proceed for the free breakfast provided by the hotel. We have a great rest and the room was so cozy, till we don't feel like getting up.

Good morning, here's my fresh wake up look.
The aircon was so cold till I have to put on a cardigan all the time I was in hotel room.

We headed down to Palm Garden Cafe @ level 1 at 8.50am. Free breakfast was served from 6am to 10.30am.

Here's what I have for breakfast.
I love anything with eggs.

Picked some light bites from the buffet spread.
They have spring roll, siew mai, sausage and fried wanton.

Oat wheat.

The portion of breakfast was just nice for me.
After breakfast, we went back to hotel to rest again. Today will be a relaxing day since our itinerary was just shopping at AEON Mall Tebrau City, so we just chill and take our time. No need for rushing today.

I love this stripe cardigan, it brings out a chic vibe to my outfit.
Enough of rest, ready to head out.

The swimming pool was located at level 11.
Can you spot it?

We went down to Palm Garden Cafe again to try their cake.
We walked past the cafe and was attracted by their cake, so we stopped by to try their cake.

It has been a relaxing afternoon, where we laze around, enjoying the atmosphere and cake. The tai tai life was great.

In JB, you can really eat and shop all day with many places waiting for us to explore. A new fire just ignite in me, I found joy in travelling and exploring, trying out new eatery, visiting new places, learning of new fact or history and gain new experience.

I didn't much photos when we were at Aeon Mall Tebrau City since it was shopping.
Upon reaching, we explored around to select the place we wanted to try for lunch and we settled for Vivo American Pizza & Panini.

I tried on the Country Chicken Cutlet at RM22.90.
The deep fried boneless chicken was coated with seasoned batter mix. Yet another satisfying meal.
Coming to JB is really just eat and eat.

After I was done with shopping 2 hours later, we went down to J.CO Donuts & Coffee to chill out.
We ordered a J.Cool yogurt with 2 toppings for sharing.

I got myself 2 tops during the shopping. Feel so happy, plus my loots from yesterday, I got a total of 5 new clothes. Just nice can wear it for the upcoming Chinese New Year. Feeling a little tired, we went back to hotel to have a short rest before heading out for dinner.

I'm really getting old, I got so tired easily.
I feel tired even when I didn't do much stuffs today.

We traveled down to Taman Sri Tebrau for our dinner at Siang Kee Seafood Restaurant. A very famous zichar stall that serves variety of seafood and Chinese cuisine. The stall can be found along the stretch in the hawker centre.

The stall attracted crowds during night time.

We ordered sugar cane drinks that come in small and big size.

Hot plate tofu.

I always love eating hot plate tofu, it contains 2 of my favourite - sizzling egg and egg tofu. The gravy added flavour to the dish, bringing out the flavour.

Kang kong.

Salted egg prawn.
After removing the shell, you can't really taste the salted egg. It just taste like normal prawn. I prefer those without the shells.

We have fish maw soup and cereal chicken.

We don't really fancy the cereal chicken, we only ate half of it.
But we like the soup very tasty and full of ingredients.

Address: 31 A, Jalan Keris, Taman Sri Tebrau, 80050 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

Since the time was still early around 9pm, we decided to cross over to have a foot massage. It was a day full of good food and dessert, we have a great time so far.

We started off by washing our legs.

I wasn't enjoying the massage at all, the therapist used so much strength despite me telling him to be gentle. My legs were full of blue-black after that.

I will not come to this massage centre again.

We went back to hotel after the massage.
This was how I spent my new year eve. Hope everyone has a great new year eve.

Good night.

Movie Review: Shock Wave & Boss Baby

This week seemed like a week for movies, I have watched 2 movies in a week - Shock Wave and Boss Baby. Let me share with you the review for these 2 movies.

Tuesday 18/4/17

Headed down to VivoCity after work to watch the preview of the movie. Thanks CK and CF for asking me along for the movie.

Shock Wave 拆弹专家 (PG13: Violence)

Running time: 119 minutes

Synopsis:
Cheung Choi-san (Andy Lau) is a senior inspector of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Bureau (EOD), a bomb disposal expert. 7 years ago, he went undercover and became the apprentice of Hung Kai-pang (Jiang Wu), a top wanted criminal specializing in bombs. During the operation, Hung manages to escape while his younger brother and allies were captured. To seek revenge for Cheung's betrayal, Hung comes back 7 years later and prepares to plant a series bombs in Hong Kong, which creates public panic, and lures Cheung out for action to unfold an ultimate plan for revenge.

Someone has to do the job, so Cheung wants to be that someone, to take on the job and protect everyone else. He is even willing to sacrifice himself to save the rest. His courage and righteous character is what I admire.

The movie also show the romance side of Cheung where he fall in love with a school teacher, Carmen, starred by Song Jia. They broke up eventually due to the dangerous nature of Cheung's work.

The thing that they feared happen. Cheung found Carmen in a car boot being tied up with a grenade held in her hands. Hung wanted Cheung to experience the helpless feeling he felt when they captured their brother. Now he is back for revenge against those participated in the operation 7 years ago.

Hung blocked the highway tunnel and exit and held hundreds of people as hostages with 1,000kg of C4 explosives being activated. He demanded the release of his brother from the prison and helicopter to get them out of Hong Kong.

With hostages, machine guns and bombs put all over the place, we can imagine how many lives are lost and how emotional the scene will be. It has heart wrenching and sorrow scene that drove me to tears.

Hong Kong's police film is always worth the watch. Head over to the cinema theatre to catch it now.

Friday 21/4/17

Finally it's TGIF, weekend is here again. I welcome my weekend with a dinner and movie date.
We been wanting to watch Boss Baby since it started showing, but we couldn't find time to do so.

We decided to watch at Golden Village @ Plaza Singapura as I have a $10 capitaland voucher to utilize. After purchasing the ticket, we settled our dinner at The Manhattan FISH MARKET.

We have fish & chips for our dinner.
The dory fish was crispy on the outer and moist on the inner. The cheese and mayo sauce help to blend the oiliness of the fish so it did not leave much of a greasy feel after eating. Just nice for movie after our meal.

The Boss Baby is a hilariously story about how a new baby's arrival impacts a family. With a sly, heart-filled message about the importance of family,

Where on earth does a baby arrived in wearing a suit?
Yea, it's Boss Baby.

Soon after his bossy baby brother's arrival, 7 years old Tim discovered the weird actions of his brother.  A baby could talk and conduct babies meeting with the babies in their neighbourhood. Boss Baby is here for a mission to destroy the puppy's plan and save the babies from extinction.

To execute his plan, he needs the help from Tim. In order for Tim to help him, they make a deal.
Boss Baby will return back to Baby Corp (the company he is working for) after the mission and Tim will then become the only child back and enjoy his parents' attention.

From loggerheads to brothers, the pairs has bonded and get along well through the collaboration to accomplish the mission. The movie sends out a strong mission on family bonding. No matter how fierce we always fight with our siblings, during times of danger, the siblings love will automatically be displayed and we will protect each other with our lives.

It is a hilarious movie with happy ending. Suitable for family to watch.
